How Do Emergency Ambulance Services Differ From Non-Emergency Medical Transportation?
Emergency ambulance services are designed for life-threatening situations. They provide rapid response, on-the-spot medical care by paramedics, and immediate transport to the nearest hospital to deliver critical, life-saving treatment.

In contrast, non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) offers a safe, reliable solution for patients who need assistance traveling to and from medical appointments but are not experiencing a medical emergency. These services accommodate individuals using wheelchairs or gurneys and are commonly used for hospital discharges, facility-to-facility transfers, and routine visits—all without the need for emergency care.

Does My Insurance Cover Non-Emergency Medical Transportation?
Insurance plans may cover medically necessary non-emergency transportation, but coverage varies by provider. Your insurance carrier will determine if the transport meets their medical necessity criteria. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to verify eligibility and requirements for non-emergency transport reimbursement.
Does Medicare Cover Non-Emergency Ambulance Transport?
In general, Medicare does not cover non-emergency ambulance services unless the patient is bed-confined and cannot walk, sit in a chair or wheelchair, or safely be transported by any other means. Medicare will also not cover transport for convenience or to a non-nearest preferred facility. Additionally, Medicare does not cover wheelchair, stretcher, or gurney transport under routine circumstances. Please contact Medicare for more details regarding eligibility.
How Does ALEMS CARE TRANSPORT Establish Rates?
Our rates are fair, competitive, and compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations. Pricing is based on:

What Does My Insurance Cover?
Coverage for non-emergency medical transportation varies depending on your insurance policy. Some plans may include transportation benefits, while others may require prior authorization or limit coverage to medically necessary services.

It’s important to review your insurance policy and speak with your provider to understand what is covered, any documentation required, and if pre-approval is necessary. For assistance or questions, feel free to contact ALEMS CARE TRANSPORT—we’re here to help guide you through the process.
